Bitter yerba mate – how to reduce the bitterness?

The bitter aftertaste is one of the distinctive features of yerba mate infusions. Many people start enjoying it only after some time from their first experience and some simply prefer more delicate tastes. How to reduce the bitterness and enjoy yerba mate tea?

How to reduce bitterness?

The bitterness that is typical for yerba mate infusions is connected with a high content of tannins - the substance responsible for bitter taste. It may be also caused by other factors, e.g. the way of drying plants and preparing infusions. If you’re not a fan of strong bitterness of yerba mate but still want to enjoy its features, you may use some advice. The easiest way to reduce the bitter taste is by using smaller amounts of yerba mate. Usually, it is recommended to use about 30 g but if the infusion is too bitter, you can reduce it. Another important question is the temperature of the water - yerba mate should be brewed with water at 70-80°C. It’s very important - if the water is too hot, the infusion becomes even more bitter!

Yerba mate with fruit

You can find many versions of yerba mate. It is caused by the diversity of ways of production. Some types of yerba mate are being dried with smoke, other with hot air. The smoky aftertaste is usually strong enough to be felt in infusions and add even more bitterness that advanced mateists love. If you don’t like it, choose air-dried yerba mate. It’s much more delicate than the one dried with smoke. However, if you don’t want to drink traditionally bitter products, you can choose from dozens of yerba mate with fruit additives. Our online shop is proud to offer a wide range of products in this type. We especially recommend our brands - Yaguar and Verde Mate. Their offers are perfect for everyone who appreciates the sweet taste of yerba mate. A good option is Yaguar Frutas Dulces - yerba mate with dried apple, pear and mango.
