Mary Rose – culinary matcha tea – authentic flavour in your kitchen 🌱🍵

Mary Rose Matcha is a green tea powder, originating from the Hangzhou region in China. Thanks to the careful selection of leaves and their fine grinding on stone mills, we obtain an infusion of exceptional intensity. It is characterised by a beautiful, emerald-green colour and a rich profile, in which subtle tartness combines with a distinct umami flavour.

As a culinary matcha, it constitutes a phenomenal choice for every day. The composition is 100% powdered green tea, without a single gram of artificial colours or preservatives. It brilliantly boosts energy, introduces a state of pleasant focus, and at the same time opens up endless possibilities in everyday culinary experiments! 🌿

What is matcha tea and what makes it special? 🍃

Matcha is a finely milled green tea that stands out not only for its intense colour and deep flavour but also for the way it is consumed – the infusion is made from whole ground leaves. This means we consume them entirely, providing the body with more valuable substances, such as antioxidants, amino acids, and chlorophyll.

Culinary matcha, in turn, is a variant created with lovers of kitchen variations in mind. It is characterised by a stronger, decidedly more expressive flavour. Why is this its greatest asset? Because its tea profile does not disappear when mixed with milk, flour, or sugar! It is a flawless choice for creating colourful, green desserts, baked goods, ice cream, and, of course, creamy matcha lattes. 🍰🥤

The art of brewing matcha and culinary inspirations 🍵

The traditional method of preparing matcha originates from Japanese tea culture and is associated with the chanoyu ceremony. It utilises a special matchawan bowl and a bamboo chasen whisk. Of course, you can prepare matcha classically, with just water, celebrating peace of mind. Remember, however, that culinary matcha is above all a versatile star of the modern kitchen! Its expressive, tea flavour combines fantastically with plant-based beverages and the sweetness of desserts. 👨‍🍳

How to prepare matcha tea traditionally in 4 simple steps?

  1. Measure and sift: Pour 1-2 g of matcha into a vessel (preferably sifted through a strainer).
  2. Add water: Add 70-100 ml of hot, but not boiling water (70-80°C).
  3. Mix: Whisk the infusion with a bamboo chasen whisk or a milk frother, making "W"-shaped movements with your hand.
  4. Serve and enjoy: Top up with water to your liking and enjoy the taste of matcha!

How and what to use culinary matcha for?

Matcha is also a perfect addition to culinary experiments. Use it as an ingredient in your favourite recipes.

  • 🍵 Matcha latte: Sift 1-2 g of powder through a strainer into a mug to prevent lumps. Pour in water (about 70-100 ml) at a temperature of 70-80°C. Making energetic "W"-shaped movements, whisk the infusion with a bamboo chasen whisk or a milk frother. Top up with your favourite, warm frothed milk.
  • 🥤 Green smoothies: Enrich your morning smoothie with a teaspoon of matcha, blending it with fruits, spinach, and oat milk.
  • 🍰 Baked goods and sweets: Add sifted matcha to pancake batter, muffins, or homemade ice cream to give them a phenomenal, emerald colour and a unique character.

❓ FAQ – frequently asked questions about Mary Rose culinary matcha tea

1. How does culinary matcha differ from ceremonial matcha?

Ceremonial matcha is a product of the highest quality, usually originating from the first harvest. It stands out with a sweetish, very subtle flavour, which is why it is traditionally served exclusively with water. Culinary matcha, on the other hand, is characterised by a stronger, noticeably more tart and expressive flavour. Thanks to this, its profile does not 'disappear' when mixed with milk, sugar, or flour, making it the best choice for culinary recipes.

2. Can Chinese culinary matcha be prepared classically (to drink with water)?

Of course! You can brew it traditionally, using just water at a temperature of about 70-80°C. However, you must remember that its flavour will be more intense and significantly more bitter compared to premium and ceremonial grade teas. If you prefer milder infusions, it will work better with the addition of frothed milk as a matcha latte.

3. How should powdered green tea be stored?

Powdered green tea leaves are very susceptible to oxidation and the effects of light. In order for your matcha tea to retain its emerald colour, rich aroma, and all the valuable substances for the body, store it in a tightly sealed container in a cool, dark, and dry place after opening.
